Ewoud Viane Belgium, b. 1996

Biography

Ewoud Viane (°1996, Izegem, Belgium – lives and works in Ghent) creates paintings that blur the boundary between surface and object. Working with textiles, wooden panels and epoxy resin, he builds layered surfaces where texture, folds and subtle reliefs bring depth and shadow into play. While firmly rooted in the tradition of painting, the tactile qualities of his work evoke a sculptural presence, inviting the viewer to perceive them both as image and as material body.

His practice is deeply engaged with art historical traditions, from the refinement of botanical illustration to the visual language of classical still life. Using soft pastels, gouache and cotton rope, Viane transforms ordinary sources into layered interpretations. In doing so, he redefines the possibilities of materiality and pictorial technique in a contemporary context.

His ongoing series of botanical works stands as a contemporary homage to nature and its representation, where careful observation meets experimentation. Balancing between recognition and enigma, Viane’s work opens up a space where the familiar becomes unexpected.
