Edouard Devriendt (b. 1993, Ghent) is a multidisciplinary Belgian artist who lives and works between the crafted logic of object design and the introspective quietude of painting. Known for his practice under the design studio Vormen - notably commissioned to create bespoke chairs for the new Kanal Museum - Devriendt approaches both objects and images as fragments extracted from the world around him. A chair and a brushstroke may serve different purposes, but both, in his hands, begin with close observation and end in tender distillation.
Painting allows Edouard to slow things down, to capture moments that might otherwise disappear, and let them go when the time is right.
These are quiet confessions - struggles and feelings of tristesse - intimately enwrapped in vague brushstrokes that pupate into poetic snapshots on canvas.
Edouard’s work is not about what’s shown, but what quietly lingers.
Just as life is not about what’s shown, but what quietly lingers.
