Daniëlle Hoogendoorn Netherlands, b. 1990

Biography

Inspired by Baudelaire’s Fleurs du Mal, Dutch artist Danielle Hoogendoornexplores the enduring symbolism of flowers in her project In ThoseFlowers, Infinity’s Infinity. She connects this motif to the rich traditionof Dutch flower imagery, rooted in 17th-century Vanitas paintings thatreflected themes of mortality and impermanence.

This cultural heritage evolved into today’s thriving Dutch floricultureindustry, with the tulip as a symbol of national trade success. Yet,the economic growth of the flower sector also raises concerns aboutsustainability and environmental impact. Hoogendoorn addresses thistension by creating vibrant terracotta flower sculptures—permanent, unfading alternatives to short-lived cut flowers.

Her immersive installation at The Wunderwall combines mural art, ceramic bouquets, and auction-inspired displays. Visitors are invitedto co-create their own arrangements, highlighting the expressiveand symbolic potential of flowers. Through her work, Hoogendoornreframes the flower as a lasting emblem of beauty, heritage, andecological consciousness.
