Sophie Doutreligne

With a background in art history, Sophie Doutreligne brings together historical reflection and artistic practice. Her engagement with feminist research into avant-garde practices fostered a sensitivity to materials that have traditionally been undervalued within art history, such as yarn, textiles and beads.

Working across embroidery, textile collage, hand-knotted rugs and drawing, Doutreligne builds visual worlds in which memory, imagination and lived experience overlap. Her work often emerges from personal traces—daydreams, nightmares, and everyday observations—which are transformed into layered compositions that move between intimacy and distance.

Within this process, she explores shifting boundaries between art and craft, thinking and making, play and reflection. By embracing traditional crafts techniques that demand patience, skill and perseverance, she temporarily escapes the overwhelming pressure of contemporary mediated life. These repetitive and tactile processes open up space for reflection on personal experiences, memories and emotions. At the same time, her work reflects on the role of the artist today, navigating between intimate self-expression and a broader sense of collective responsibility towards the world we inhabit.
